German bakers have launched a campaign against synthetic cheese in bakery products. What the Germans call "analogue cheese" is not only increasingly substituted for the real thing in pizzas, savoury rolls and convenience meals, it is done so without any mention of the fact in the respective labelling. Around 100,000 tonnes of synthetic cheese, made of protein powder, vegetable oil, water and concentrated flavour additives, was produced in Germany last year. The analogue product costs around 50 per cent less than the average price for real baking cheese and according to critics this is leading to rapid expansion in its use.rnNow a campaign by the central association of German master bakers involves a special poster with the title "We use only original cheese from milk" for shop window displays nationwide (pictured).
