In a number of ways, this is a fascinating text; it is also something of a comforting read. It is fascinating inasmuch as it provides a detailed review not only of the historical development and current approaches to tourism education in the college/university sectors in a variety of countries (in many cases providing a valuable insight into higher education in those countries more generally), but also of the varying extent to which the emergence of tourism higher education has reflected national policies towards tourism education and its contribution to broader tourism development more generally. It is also fascinating in that it reveals both the globalisation of tourism higher education and the fact that, in many countries, the history of tourism education is significantly longer and more complex than might have been imagined. Equally, it is comforting for those involved in tourism higher education to recognise that not only are they part of a global phenomenon, but also that they face similar challenges and issues in the provision, development and administration of the subject.
