In his 1930 essay "Dream and Existence," the Swiss psychiatrist Lud-wig Binswanger, director of the elite Bellevue asylum, wrote: Modern man must build his world in his own heart, after making himself lord and master of his own life and death; and the external world, ruled by non-spiritual, economic, and technical powers, can no longer offer him support. Ancient man, in contrast, neither while awake nor dreaming, knew such primal loneliness in the cosmos.
