CONFECTIONER'S COMMENT

I started work in the industry at 18 and have been working with the UK's largest confectionery-only cash & carry, Hancock's, for 40 years. I started out as a shelf filler before moving up to assistant manager and then manager. I started managing depots and eventually reached the level of director responsible for purchasing, marketing and sales.rnI have always had a strong commercial skill and enjoyed driving the business forward. Confectionery is quite a niche market with a limited number of people and when I started it was very much a 'dead man's shoes' game. You did not move forward in the industry until your predecessor retired. I wouldn't accept that and very much rocked the apple cart. It upset quite a few people at the time but it has both been beneficial for myself and for Hancock's.
