Back in the days of Leonardo da Vinci, 'artisan' (from the Italian artigiano), was the term used to describe "skilled manual craftsmen whose works were rigorously decorative and included furniture, jewellery, clothing, fine arts and paintings and sculptures." Among the artisans, the most influential group were the bosses - the business owners who enjoyed a higher social status in their communities. According to Wikipedia, 'artisanal' is a term that has been used to indicate that certain types of food, such as bread, cheese, preserves and of course chocolate, are hand made. But has the term artisan been over used and misunderstood?
