The liberalization of electricity markets around the world continues to be one of the longest running and most interesting set of microeconomic endeavours. In many jurisdictions, such as the European Union, the process of de- and re-regulation of national and supranational electricity markets has just begun. Recent international experience indicates that initial market reform has often lead to controversial side effects requiring careful reconsideration.
