INTRODUCTION: FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES AND THE SEXUALITY DEBATES

Returning home from an outing to see the new film Sex and the City in order to resume work on two (overdue) papers about the representation of women on current television, I am struck by how are relevant the debates which characterized the Barnard sexuality conference to the central concerns of feminist media studies today. The range of article included in this issue is broad, and includes authors whose perspectives range across a wide spectrum including a Christian anti-pornography viewpoint (Boulton), feminists who question the pro-pornography feminist position (McRobbie), feminist scholars studying the peculiar opportunities and inequalities faced by women sex workers (Brents), transsexual feminists (Stryker), feminist activists (Queen and Cornelia), and queer feminists who ask essentially "What now?" e.g., how can queers resist the pressures to "become normative" (Henderson, Freccero), to develop sex and love lives that look pretty much the same as those with a heterosexual sexuality?
