Tunneling Work Begins on San Diego Pipeline

Since the late 1980s, the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA) has been implementing a number of improvements to the system of pipelines it uses to import water and distribute it throughout the county. Chief among these activities is the Emergency Storage Project, an effort to link the county's reservoirs and pipelines to improve the network's operational flexibility and ensure its reliability in the event of a natural disaster. In June one of the project's major components-the 11 mi (18 km) long San Vicente Pipeline-achieved a key milestone as construction crews began operating tunnel-boring machines (TBMS) along the pipeline's alignment.
