A study conducted by Purdue University researchers has established that the best way to interest young students in engineering and technology may be to focus onrninteractive problem-solv-ing projects. The research project looked at 126rneighth graders in rural In- diana who were studying the effect of human ac- tivities on water and water quality; half were taught using traditional methods and half were required to build water purification devices. Although all the students had access to the same textbook, the stu- dents who were required to build devices demonstrated a better grasp of the issues than the ones who learned through lectures, reading assignments, and tests.
