AFTER SEVERAL failed attempts to repair splits in the structural framing of the school's gymnasium, officials at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Canton were so close to giving up on the structure that they considered demolishing it. But before taking such a drastic step, they decided to try one last time to restore the building. They retained the services of Western Wood Structures, Inc., of Tualatin, Oregon, a firm that specializes in the design and repair of wooden structures. The move not only preserved the gym but also saved the school more than $ 1 million.
