This month we have not one but two pictorial books covering large parts of the waterways system. The first, The Canal Guide, takes a look at the waterways from a slightly different angle - quite literally. Look carefully at many of the pictures and you might just guess that the author is a canoeist as they're taken from a couple of feet above the water. It isn't a canoeing guide, though, it's a general pictorial guide to 'Britain's 50 best canals' (ie, pretty much all of the canals plus one or two rivers), drawing on the author's earlier book Canals of Britain, with descriptions of the routes, some quirky local history, sketch maps, details of local canal societies, and information as to which Ordnance Survey maps you need if you want to explore them in greater detail.
