Lost Tracks: Buffalo National Park, 1909-1939

Unlike other books on the history of Canadian national parks, this one is different because it describes and explains the history of 'a forgotten park' that no longer exists. Buffalo National Park was established near Wainwright, Alberta in 1909 but closed in 1939. The book, based on an MA thesis, is rigorously researched and thoroughly footnoted. The author argues that 'Buffalo National Park cannot be considered a wildlife preservation effort. Rather, the park was an artifact defined and shaped by the cultural, political and economic climate of early twentieth century Canada' (p. 2).
