摘要

Excavations conducted in the fall of 1986 to mitigate the impact of Construction of the Erbie campground to archeological sites 3NW205 and 3NW206 in the Buffalo National River, Newton County, Arkansas resulted in the recovery of artifact assemblages dating from the Late Archaic and Mississippi periods. At 3NW205, a Mississippi period house with associated features contained preserved botanical remains and animal bone indicating a wide use of plants, both domestic and wild, and animals in 1,324+/-47 A.D. A Late Archaic smudger and large feature dated at 1,267+/-622 B.C. indicate that the Late Archaic continued into the Christian era Ozarks. Features produced few artifacts that were assignable to time period. To realize the potential of most Ozarkian sites, intensive recovery techniques, including controlled surface collection and flotation of total feature contents.
