The Simandou iron ore project and other mining concessions in the West African state of Guinea have been threatened by the death of President Lansana Conte in late December and the subsequent military coup. Conte headed an autocratic government that tolerated little opposition but which virtually collapsed following his death, allowing a group of army officers under Captain Moussa Dadis Camara to seize control.rnCamara has warned that all "defective" mining contracts will be cancelled in an effort to tackle corruption. Mining projects look certain to be delayed at the very least, so it is likely that planned rail and port projects will be postponed if not cancelled.
