The copper cladding of Make's 2012 Olympic handball arena has been criticised by the Metropolitan Police, which claims the "high value" of the metal will make it a magnet for thieves.rnThe box-like 6,000-seat venue - one of only five permanent venues and the third largest in the Olympic Park - is recommended for full planning approval by planning officials from the Olympic Delivery Authority ahead of a meeting next Tuesday. The design has been praised for its elegance and simplicity.rnBut planning papers seen by BD reveal that the Metropolitan Police fears its cladding and national profile will attract criminals "from a wide area".rn"The use of copper as a material in cladding the upper vertical elevations of the building creates a greater risk of theft from and damage to the building in legacy phase," a statement from the Met said, adding that it was concerned that "the copper cladding will be seen as an easy target".rnThe force also criticised the proposal to create grass embankments at one end of the building, which it said would give would-bernthieves easy access and would increase potential antisocial behaviour because of its effect on "surveillance opportunities".
