ORTHODOX JEWISH BOARDING SCHOOL USES COLORED BRICK PATTERNS TO DIFFERENTIATE BUILDINGS

The Harry and Wanda Zekelman Campus, a boarding school for boys of middle and high school age in Oak Park, Mich., is part of the Orthodox Jewish Chabad-Lubavitch movement. In accordance with tradition, the boys are separated by age in the 25,000-sf school building and in the 20,000-sf dormitory, which are clad in varying masonry textures and glass that visually segment the buildings into sections. Dark gray CalStar bricks are arranged in a Flemish bond pattern to create a texturized appearance. Repeating horizontal stripes consisting of five rows of tangerine bricks and one row of gray surround classroom windows; the reverse pattern is used to signify the lunchroom.
