Today, I would like to talk about what is currently happening in relation to technological innovations in the United States, based on the theme, "Can R&D drive the marketplace or does the marketplace drive R&D?" The United States government accelerated the transition to digital service through mandatory requirements. It first required that all broadcasters start digital broadcasting by mid 2003. A March 2007 deadline was set for all new receivers to be made compliant with digital broadcasting reception. By February 17, 2009, all analog services will terminate. This government mandated transition to digital broadcasting can be called a "technology push." It is a lot difficult to carry out than letting consumers themselves draw the technologies they want into the marketplace ("market pull").
