The beneficial health effects of inclusion of n-3 PUFA fromnfish and fish oils in the human diet have been extensivelyninvestigated in the past three decades beginning with theninitial reports on the reduced prevalence of IHD in GreenlandnInuit(1). Extensive nutritional and clinical studies continuento indicate that higher intakes of EPA and DHA derivednfrom marine sources can reduce the risk of cardiac diseasesnas well as treat and perhaps prevent several inflammatoryndiseases. Since the natural stocks of many of the popularnfatty fish rich in EPA and DHA have declined, farmed fishnsuch as Atlantic and Pacific salmon, sea bream, sea bass,nhalibut and other marine fish can help to meet the consumerndemand for fish as a source of n-3 PUFA.
