Britain's largest bakers have been battling to keep supermarket shelves stocked in recent weeks as demand has doubled in some cases. Despite the best efforts of bakers, many shoppers faced empty shelves as consumer concerns heightened over the coronavirus and a lockdown. Businesses, including Allied Bakeries, were quick to reduce the number of different products being manufactured so they could focus on key lines. "We decided early on to remove some smaller-run and niche SKUs... to maximise production capacity for the in-demand core lines," said a spokesperson for Kingsmill owner Allied.
