QS: These days, many pilots start with foam airplanes like those from the Parkzone line and progress quickly. As their skill levels increase, they want and need more advanced aircraft. Foam alone has its limitations: when you start to add size and power, things get heavy, more flexible and weaker. So I thought I'd hollow out a foam airplane and add carbon fiber and plywood in key areas to make the structure stout. The result is stiffer than a balsa model that will not require woodworking or covering repairs. Of course, we would like it to be as light as a balsa plane, but what we end up with is a plane that excels in inertia-type maneuvers, handles wind much better, and you can as well leave it in the sun all day without having to worry about wrinkles in your covering.
