AMG adding more go

Aufrecht Melcher Gross Asbach, better known as AMG, has brought a high-performance technology dimension to many of the products of Mercedes-Benz. AMG, a DaimlerChrysler subsidiary, has put its stamp on 16 current Mercedes models including the new "four-door coupe" CLS and the folding hardtop SLK, to each of which it has given a 5.4-L engine (although Mercedes designates it 55 for 5.5-L), producing 265 kW (355 hp) in the SLK and 350 kW (470 hp) in the CLS. AMG first became involved with what it terms the "professional enhancement" of Mercedes-Benz cars in 1967 when it was still a small tuning company founded by Hans Werner Aufrecht. Now, it has grown to achieve international status with a staff of 660 plus some 150 consultants, many of them engine or chassis specialists. Experience gained on the racetrack has been extrapolated to production cars. The company became part of DaimlerChrysler six years ago, and AMG versions are planned from the concept stage of new models.
