A proposal by entrepreneur Malcom Bricklin to import a range of inexpensive cars from an indigenous Chinese automaker is being met with derision in some quarters, excitement in others, and perhaps anxiety in still others. Bricklin is most notable in the automotive industry for importing Yugo vehicles in to the United States from Yugoslavia in the 1980s. That venture (Yugo America) failed after several years, but the self-described "visionary" has enjoyed some success in the business, including the importation of Subaru vehicles via the establishment of Subaru of America, as well as two Italian sports cars. He also developed and sold his own sports car, the Bricklin-SV-1. So while some consider his bid to import low-priced models from Chinese maker Chery overly ambitious and doomed to failure, others aren't ready to write him off yet.
