The general expectation across the automotive industry is that electric vehicles will become more significant in the years to come as OEMs strive to curtail their fleet-average emissions. Before that can happen, however, several challenges need to be overcome. At present, EVs cost significantly more than their combustion-engine counterparts, but arguably more important are the doubts the general public have overthe range of the vehicles.The fear of the battery running low when far away from a charging station is one that must be addressed if the technology is ever going to be a mainstream success. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation, in Stuttgart, Germany, are seeking to deal with both the prohibitive costs and the performance issues.
