When new technologies are developed, the associated costs of production often prove to be a significant hurdle before these innovations are ultimately adopted by OEMs. Before there is a genuine business case for incorporating it into a passenger vehicle, the raw technology typically requires further research. Hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles have yet to be fully adopted by the industry at large. At present, they are restricted to only smaller, limited-production vehicle projects-owing, in part, to development costs still being significantly more expensive than those for other fuel sources. But now researchers at the University of Edinburgh may well be playing an important role in changing that situation.
