The need to study grapevine genes and delve into genomics has not always been well understood or supported by industry, according to Orlando Wyndham chief winemaker Phillip Laffer. Speaking at the recent Cooperative Research Centre for Viticulture (CRCV) Symposium in Mildura, which brought together almost 200 researchers and industry personnel, Phillip said there was a great need to study genes. 'Given the current legislation that prevents genetically modified grapevines, there has been some difficulty from industry in understanding the time and resources dedicated to this research,' he said.
