Bodily experience requires the integration of multisensory information relating to the body in space. 'Ownership' of body parts can be compromised by lesions of the posterior parietal cortex and temporo-parietal junction, so that limb ownership is either completely absent (unilateral neglect) or attributed to someone else (somatoparaphrenia). How fortunate that most of us, most of the time, manage to preserve a reasonably coherent and complete sense of individuality in a realistic and meaningful space!
