Yes, It Is Possible to Be Both a Leader and a Manager

Much has been written and taught about the difference between leadership and management, and rightly so. It is our intent to add to the content and contribute to moving this important conversation forward, because the Army is in the leader development and people business. We will leverage a unique conversational framework called "Yes-And." This is a concept that is taught at Duke University, North Carolina's Fuqua School of Business and described by Fuqua adjunct professor and master of improvisation, Bob Kulhan, in his 2017 book, Getting to "Yes And": The Art of Business Improv. "Yes" represents the unconditional acceptance of an idea, in this case, the importance of understanding the art and science of leadership and management. "And," as follow-on, takes the ideas expressed and builds on them to add more meaning and offer other ideas for consideration. Saying "yes" implies respect and gratitude for the expressed idea. Saying "and" is about making sense, finding value, then adding in a positive way to the conversation.
