The Joint Statistical Meetings are nearly here. My early thanks go to Lisa LaVange and her program committee for all their hard work. One topic I hope to be able to discuss with many of you at the JSM is science policy. Recall that I established the Science Policy Task Force (SPTF) earlier this year, chaired by Virginia deWolf. Since that time, I have been asked: What the heck is science policy, and how does science policy differ from public policy? Did I make a mistake? Should I have called this a "public policy" task force?
