摘要

ETIHAD AIRWAYS is using aircraft 3D printing to help medical institutions protect against COVID-19. Through its technical division, Etihad Engineering has created an average of 42 sets of face masks everyday using selective laser sintering (SLS), a technique normally used to manufacture parts for jets. The face masks are made from a sustainable and recyclable material. Bernhard Randerath, vice president of design, engineering and innovation, said: "We are committed to supporting the community and, at a time when medical professionals are risking their lives every day to combat COVID-19, we are proud to be able to use Etihad Engineering's technological capability to support our community in the UAE. It is in these challenging times that we must rely heavily on innovation to provide sustainable solutions." During the crisis, the Abu Dhabi-based airline has launched several initiatives to support the local community, including placing 3,000 of its staff on a voluntary basis to support the vulnerable in hospitals. Additionally, it has provided more than 1,000 meals through its catering arm (see Airliner World, June 2020).
