The United States left a detachment of F-16s and Patriot missiles in Jordan after a military exercise concluded there in June. Exercise Eager Lion involved some 8,000 personnel from 19 countries, including about 5,000 troops from each of the four US military services. The exercise ran from June 9 to 20 at locations across Jordan and challenged participants to respond to realistic scenarios while enhancing regional stability. Pentagon spokesman George Little said in a statement that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel "approved the request from the Kingdom of Jordan." However, he also noted that "all other US personnel assigned to Jordan for Eager Lion will depart at the conclusion of the exercise."
