Leonardo Da Vinci's famous mural The Last Supper is being saved from the ravages of the modern age by a sophisticated air conditioning system. The famous late 15th century masterpiece in the church refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan was suffering from the effects of air pollution from one of the most polluted areas of Western Europe Because, unlike a fresco, the mural was painted on a dry wall rather than on wet plaster, the piece began to deteriorate almost as soon as Leonardo had finished it. The work has undergone a number of restorations over the ensuing 500 years, the most recent from 1978 to 1999.
