在托妮·莫里森的作品中，因父亲缺位而凸显女性母亲的形象，但饱受摧残和压抑的黑人母亲所表现的母爱是畸形、变态和悲壮的。特殊的环境孕育了黑人女性独特的品性，特别是处在美国边缘社会的美国黑人母亲，她们以自己的忠贞和毅力传承着黑人文化，成为黑人世界的精神支柱。%Mothers are protruded in Tonni Morrison's works, for the fathers are often absent in the black people's society. However the mothering shown by the tortured and supressed mothers is abnormal, moving and tragic. The special surroundings bring up the black women's special characters, especailly to the American black mothers in the marginal society. They inherit and hand down the black culture with their great loyalty and strong will to their own culture, at last, become the spiritual pillar in the black society.
