English Humor as a Polite Strategy in Verbal Communication

摘要

Based on the theory of polite strategies,the writer proposes that verbal humor is a important polite strategy which occurs frequently in conversation exchanges of human communication.Case study adopted to reveal the pragmatic function of humorous utterance in real communications as positive,negative,indirect and self-polite strategies.
