Factors Limiting Moose at High Densities in Unit 20A. Research Performance Report, 1 July 1997-30 June 1998

This report summarizes data collected from central Unit 20A during 1 March 1996 to 19 March 1998 when moose density was high (>1 moose/sq. km.) and snowfall was low. Fieldwork included radiocollaring 91 newborn moose during May 1996 and 1997, 74 calves during March 1997 and 1998, 22 yearlings during March 1998, and 44 adults during March 1996. We also recaptured 28 adults during March 1997. We evaluated nutritional status of the moose population by measuring rumpfat depths and pregnancy rates and weighing calves. We regularly radiotracked moose to evaluate causes and rate of mortality.
