《时时刻刻》和《红字》是两部著名的美国小说，其中主要角色对于生命的态度迥然不同，尤其引人深思。前者中人物伍尔芙夫人，布朗夫人和理查德在富裕的生活和亲友的关心下却选择结束生命，而后者中海斯特在公开的羞辱和孤立中顽强地坚持生活了下来，这其中的原因主要是对女性自我实现的认知不同所造成的。激进女权主义理论强调对立和反抗，并不能意识到合作和互助对男女关系和女性价值实现的重要作用。受到这种思想的影响与否决定了两本书中人物命运的差别。%Starting from a boy student’s question, this essay tries to make a comparative analysis of the heroines suicidal experi-ence of two American novels, The Hours and The Scarlet Letter, with the conclusion that the reason why three characters in the first novel end their lives in abundance and ease while the heroine in the second novel sticks to it in isolation and humiliation is that the former characters adopted the wrong ideal of self-realization from extreme feminism while the latter didn ’t. Chasing an illusionary end and the consequently repetitive frustration may be the cause of the tragedy and the discrete results of the two book’s characters are worth studying for the comprehension of feminism.
