The protagonist Shylock in Shakespeare’s play the merchant of Venice leaves an image of being cutting and mean and loving money more than his life to the whole world. Rereading this drama and changing a perspective to view Shylock, his sad⁃ness is pitiful which includes his early dead wife, home-leaving daughter, racial discrimination, professional spurn and law cheat⁃ing.
