Objective To understand the characteristics of diabetes mellitus (DM) and the burden caused by it among Wuxi residents in 2012. Methods Processed the data from surveillance and death reporting system of Wuxi residents in 2012, and calculated the mortality rate, life expectancy, cause eliminated life expectancy, PYLL, rate of PYLL and AYLL. Results For Wuxi residents, the mortality rate of DM was 22.12/100 000 (SMR= 13.47/100 000), and for those who were more than 60 years old, the mortality rate rose significantly as the age increased. The life expectancy was 81.42 years old, and after eliminating the diabetic death factors, the indicator would increase 0.33. The PYLL was 7 258.00 person-years, the rate of PYLL was 1.54‰, and the AYLL was 6.98 years/person. Among all the indicators , there were significant differences between male and female, while differences between urban and rural areas were not significant. Conclusion Diabetes mellitus is one of the most important diseases that influences the health and life span of Wuxi residents. It is associated with age and sex. Inter-ventions should be taken on the basis of different characteristics in order to reduce the burden of diabetes.%目的：了解2012年无锡市居民糖尿病的死亡特征和疾病负担。方法统计2012年无锡市居民死亡报告监测系统中的数据，计算死亡率、期望寿命、去死因期望寿命、PYLL、PYLL率和AYLL。结果无锡市居民糖尿病死亡率为22.12/10万（标化死亡率为13.47/10万），60岁以后死亡率随年龄的增加而明显上升；期望寿命为81.42岁，去除糖尿病死因后，可增加0.33岁；PYLL为7258.00人年，PYLL率为1.54‰，AYLL为6.98年/人。各项指标性别之间差别较大，城乡之间差别不明显。结论糖尿病是影响无锡市居民健康和寿命的重要疾病之一，与年龄、性别相关。应根据不同的特点，采取干预措施，降低糖尿病的疾病负担。
