ZnT8( SLC30A8 )is a newly discovered islet-specific zinc transporter that controls zinc efflux into the extracellular matrix and intracellular vesicles to reduce the concentration of zinc in the cytoplasm.The polymorphism of the SLC30A8 gene is associated with susceptibility to type 2 diabetes. ZnT8 deletion decreased fasting and glucose - stimulated insulin secretion, however the blood glucose levels were not significantly changed in mice.
