By depicting the characters and their history, the novel cleverly criticizes the colonized history and long caste system in India. Roy explores the inherent connections among traumatic memories of caste, class and gender in postcolonial context. Furthermore, along with a study of trauma theory, the novel illustrates how the characters cope with their traumatic experience and gain the possibility of trauma recovery through traumatic representation and reconstruction.
