The text is ironic in terms of the novel's title while the reality is ironic in terms of the text. The purpose of this"double irony"is to reflect upon the reasons for the September 11th terrorist incident and American social problems. On one hand, this discloses the author's advocation of harmonious ethical relationship and criticizes self-centered hegemonic logic; on the other hand, it implies that everything is a perpetual suspension in the postmodern society. The employment of irony, a narrative figure of postmodern literary creation, has realized transcendence over the superficial meaning of the text.
