The development of the art form of landscape architecture and garden design in Germany from the Middle Ages (5-15 A.D.) up to now is reviewed. How people in landscape and garden work gradually developed it into an industry and how the industry self-organized and formed the Federation of German Landscape Architects (BDLA) are shown. As of last year, the association had a history of 100 years. The German universities and colleges providing full landscape architecture programs are brielfy introduced. The architect laws of the German states regulate the industry, and the title of "architect" is protected by law. The federal Association of German Architects is the upper-level organization of state associations of architects. The following chapters introduces the legal issues about how Germany regulates the profession and deifnes the main areas of work. The requirements of both the Association of German Architects (BDA) and the Federation of German Landscape Architects are relfected.
