Xiaoyan Liu's historiography follows the rise, fall, and reinvention of two legendary, elite girls' schools in China,St.Mary's Hall (Sheng Maliya Nüxiao Nüzhong,圣玛丽亚女校)and McTyeire School, also known as Zhong-Xi (Shanghai Zhong-Xi Nüzhong,上海中西女中),and its later incarnation as Shanghai No.3 Girls School (Shanghai Shi Disan Nüzi Zhongxue,上海市第三女子中学),through three distinct periods, the late imperial, the Republican, the early People's Republic of China and its most recent nostalgic phase (more on that later).
