"The Politics of Vietnamese Romanticism and Literary History" examines how Tu&dotbelow; lu&dotbelow;c văn đoàn [Self-Strength Literary Group, TLVD] envisioned Vietnam's transformation from Confucian sociopolitical structures to a civil society liberated from French colonialism. At the forefront of Vietnam's modern literary development during the interwar period, the group's literary works explored the possibilities and limitations of westernization and Enlightenment ideas for a society grappling with colonial modernity. The project argues that Tu&dotbelow; lu&dotbelow;c văn đoàn espoused a modern, Western paradigm to advance society beyond Confucianism's accepted worldview and social structures, which were propagated under French colonial rule.;Vietnamese literary history, driven by communist ideology, has placed the literary works of the Self-Strength Literary Group under the category of chu˙ nghĩa lãng ma&dotbelow;n [romanticism]. Subsumed under this label, the group's literary works have been dismissed for their individualism, lack of political foresight, bourgeois decadence, Western (particularly French) affinities, and ultimately their failure to further social revolution. This project, however, demonstrates that Tu&dotbelow; lu&dotbelow;c văn đoàn's novels were part of a larger sociopolitical vision. The dissertation examines Tu&dotbelow; lu&dotbelow;c văn đoàn's novels in relation to fictionality, the ideas of Western Enlightenment, sentiments of nationalism, sociological thought, gender roles, and sociolinguistics.
