ANALISI DI PANTALONE, VECCHIO MERCANTE VENEZIANO IN QUATTORDICI COMMEDIE DEL GOLDONI. (ITALIAN TEXT).

The "Analisi di Pantalone, vecchio mercante veneziano in quattordici commedie del Goldoni" is, as stated by the title itself, an analysis of Pantalone. To this end a summary and analysis of each of the plays chosen were made. In addition, three other chapters ("Commedia dell'Arte", Goldoni's Reform of the Theatre, "Fonti letterarie" about the authors he had previously studied and whose influence had significantly affected Goldoni the man and the playwright) are also part of this study. The final chapter presents significant comparisons on which the conclusion of the study is based.;Before writing each summary and analysis, a statistical study of Pantalone's role (included as an Appendix to this study) was made in order to establish his importance in all of Goldoni's plays. In fourteen of the thirty-six plays in which he appears he was found to have a function which ranged from important to central, (30 to 50% of the time on stage). Hence these fourteen works serve as the basis of the character analysis.;To shed light on the parallel that was observed between Pantalone and the moral and social life of the author himself, a biographical section on the latter was deemed appropriate.;Since the study demonstrates that the character of Pantalone is extremely consistent in all of the fourteen works, we can conclude that he embodies many of the human qualities which Goldoni wished to personify: a good father, a good friend, a good tutor, a philosopher, always aware of his important role as an honorable, serious old man proud of his Venetian background and profession, but above all, proud of his family.;Pantalone, being one of the four masks of the "Commedia dell'Arte", in Goldoni's plays is no longer ridiculous or avaricious but a serious, honorable man, proud of his Venetian background, of his family and of his profession. He could be considered the voice of Goldoni's view of the world of the new rising class--the bourgeoisie.
