There is a growing consensus that the arts are an integral part of education with effects that contribute to academic achievement and positive self-concept. By identifying non-academic activities that relate positively to academic achievement, parents can make more informed choices that may make a difference in the cultivation of successful academic achievement. In the current study, parents of 8 to 12 year old female students were given an activity survey at various dance schools and elementary schools in Orange County, California. The survey provided information for dance activity as well as the activities of students with academic interests, sports participation, theater, and social activities. Participation in dance and academic activities was associated with higher grades.
