Teaching universal design toward implementation in a residential environment.

摘要

Universal design is the design concept that acknowledges the basic needs and desires of all people that acts to create design that celebrates human diversity.; The design process requires an awareness and sensitivity of a diverse population by focusing upon the needs and desires of individuals over their respective lifespans and varied lifestyles. The educational tool is designed on the premise that empathy is the key to learning and understanding the importance of universal design for a more inclusive community. Gaining empathy for limitations and the accompanying feelings does not require several years of education but it does require a desire and effort to learn and understand the issues if a successful outcome is expected.; The outcome can be achieved through the use of reflective questions and visuals paired together to teach the necessity for implementing universal design concepts in residential environments. Universal design deals with the physical and psychological issues of being human and celebrates equality across diversity. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
