International Mobile Telecommunications 2000 (IMT-2000) adopted several standards for third generation (3G) wireless network systems recently. One of them is proposed by Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) TR45.5 committee in the United States and named as CDMA2000, which employs a wideband code division multiple access (CDMA) scheme. In this dissertation, one of the radio configurations specified in the CDMA2000 standard is considered and counterpart receivers for base station and mobile station are designed and simulated. All power control algorithms that are specified by the CDMA2000 standard are interconnected, and their effects on the bit error rate (BER) results, mean and variance of the measured signal-to-interference-ratio (SIR) of the CDMA2000 are studied.; Recently, adaptive antennas have been studied for CDMA systems to dynamically improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the desired signal when the mobile station is moving. They are mainly applied at the base station, The system configuration for the reverse link of the CDMA2000 system employs a pilot channel while the IS-95 system, i.e., a second generation CDMA, does not. An effective adaptive antenna algorithm for the CDMA2000 system is proposed by using the pilot channel in the reverse link of the CDMA2000. The implementations of the proposed algorithm in CDMA2000 and another CDMA system, named WCDMA, are also shown, In this dissertation, power control algorithm effects on both reverse and forward links are also studied when the adaptive antennas are employed for the reverse link.
