Mindfulness, utilized in multiple psychological interventions, may combat repetitive cognitive processes that maintain distress (e.g., rumination and worry) by teaching nonjudgmental awareness of present-moment experiences and by exposing clients to their problematic reactive patterns. Research to date has supported mindfulness as an effective alternative to repetitive thought processes that may decrease repetitive thoughts over time. There are numerous techniques available for training mindfulness, some of which may be better suited to novices. Given that mindfulness techniques are relatively new to psychological interventions, research is needed regarding the efficacy of mindfulness across broad populations, including various racial groups. The present study found support for the use of both focused and unfocused mindfulness exercises, although the modest levels of negative affect endorsed by this student sample merits replication in a clinical sample. Further, the present findings suggest that whereas all clients may benefit from mindfulness, those who endorse high levels of rumination may experience larger reductions in their distress following initial mindfulness exercises. Last, this study found no differences in the effectiveness of mindfulness for decreasing distress or eliciting present-moment nonjudgmental awareness across participants from varying racial backgrounds.
