Educational application of Bowen theory in the lives of four persons.

The purpose of this study was to describe and explore how four persons applied Bowen theory. These persons had experience with the theory for three years in an informal, non-academic setting prior to the study. Two research questions framed the study: Was there evidence that Bowen theory concepts were applied by the participant in his or her family? How did the participant demonstrate application of Bowen theory in a given account? Data were collected with a questionnaire, individual interviews, and focus groups. Focus groups were structured in accordance with the family group model developed by Bowen for clinical application. The data were documented in four family diagrams that provided a visual image of the written case study. Bloom's taxonomy was used to identify and define application. The findings from the study that: (1) application of Bowen theory occurred with non-clinicians in an educational program, (2) the focus group methodology provided a concise research and learning tool, (3) the family diagram was an indispensable tool for mapping application of Bowen theory, (4) participants made change in self that made a difference in family, (5) the married participants demonstrated application of Bowen theory as a helpful resource for the couple, (6) Bowen theory helped participants in the workplace, and (7) it was important for the instructor to maintain diligence about the primary language of Bowen theory. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that (1) expansion of Bowen theory training models should include more accessible programs, (2) focus groups are an educational tool in Bowen theory, (3) change as emotional process is an area for future study, (4) Bowen theory could be useful to Marriage Enrichment and Marriage Encounter, (5) application of Bowen theory in the workplace is an area for future study, and (6) further research be conducted in application of Bowen theory with persons who are not mental health professionals.
