Purpose:The bone age estimation is very importantfor orthodontic practice. Bone age estimation by cervical vertebrae is getting attention over period of time in the literature to reduce further radiation and cost to the patient. The aim of this study was to establish two new formulas for cervicalvertebralboneage estimation in girls and boys of Xinjiang,China using lateralcephalogram.Materials and methods:The sample of correlation study consisted 140 girls and 90 boys ofXinjiang,China. The subjects were divided in six groups according to chronological age in the range of10 to15years of age. The morphological dimensions of Cervical Vertebrae (C3 and C4) were measured on lateral cephalogram usingVixwin2000 software. The validity of the formulae established by the statistical model was assessed against the bone age determined by. Bjork , Grave and Brown method. The statistical model showed the correlation between the two measurements that are significant at the P<0 .01 levels.Results:The statistical model for girls and boys are useful for this population. The statistical model for:Girls:18.167 +14.317 AH3/PH3 + 25.170 AH4/PH4.Adjustedsquare was .993 (P<.001).Boys:16.042+ 12.032 AH3/H3 + 26.371 AH4/AP4.Adjustedrsquare was .996 (p<.001). Conclusion:The newly developed formulae to determine skeletalmaturation could be used to evaluate children growth and maturity stages as like the other well established method.
